Airline tickets
Airline tickets are cash. Please treat them as such. You will have to pay for new tickets
if your original tickets are lost or stolen.
Airport tax
Visitors to Fiji are required to pay $20 departure tax per person in Fijian currency
following check-in. Please remember to save this amount for your departure!
Attire
Visitors to Fiji will need a light tropical wardrobe: bathing suits,
shorts, T-shirts or the traditional Fijian attire -- a sulu. Both men and
women are asked not to offend the local community by wearing items such as
bikinis and brief attire when visiting villages or shopping in town.
Fijians are known as the friendliest people in the world. Your respect for
their customs and traditions will not only make you a welcome guest in
their village and homes, but add another dimension to your Fijian holiday.
Baggage and carry-on bags
All bags should be tagged. If lost, identification increases your chances
for recovery. Domestic baggage allowance is 20 kg (44 lbs). Check with
your international carrier for their requirements and limits. There is a charge per kg
over the weight limit. There may also be a charge for scuba gear,
surfboards, etc. This payment is the responsibility of the passenger
to the airline at the time of departure. Pack indispensable items,
especially medications, money and jewelry, in your carry-on bag. You never
know when checked luggage will be lost, and airlines have strict
limitations on the amount they will pay as compensation for lost or stolen
luggage. Never leave valuables unattended on the beach, in the car, or in
your room. Neither a car rental company nor a hotel will reimburse you for
stolen items.
Climate
Fiji enjoys an ideal South Seas tropical climate. Maximum summer (November to April) temperatures average 30 degrees Celsius (86°F). The winter (May to October) average maximum is 26 degrees Celsius (79°F). The Fiji sun is much stronger than you are probably used to. Don't get sunburned, use sunscreen.
Credit cards
Major credit cards are welcomed by most hotels, restaurants, shops, rental
car agencies, tours, cruises and travel agents. American Express, Diners
Club, Visa, JCB International, and MasterCard are represented in Suva.
Electricity
The electrical current in Fiji is 240 volts AC 50HZ. Fiji has three-pin
power outlets identical to those in Australia and New Zealand. If your
appliances are 110v, check for a 110/240v switch. You may need a voltage
converter. Leading hotels and resorts generally offer universal outlets for
240v or 110v shavers, hair dryers, etc.
Entry requirements
For your holiday, a valid passport for at least six months beyond the
intended period of stay and a ticket for onward travel is required.
Exchange rates
The Fijian dollar is the basic unit of currency. Fiji is well represented
by banking groups. All groups have branches and agencies throughout Fiji.
Normal business hours are from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday
and to 4 p.m. on Friday.
There is a 24-hour service at the Nadi International Airport.
Inter-island airport information
Passengers are to check-in at the inter-island airport terminal at least 45 minutes prior to departure. Luggage should be checked in with the air carrier.
Language
Fiji is an English-speaking country, although the two major races, Fijians
and Indians, speak in their vernacular. Hotel staff are fluent in English.
Scuba diving
Resort dives are available, but if you are a certified scuba diver on a
diving package or plan to scuba dive, it is required that you bring with
you proof of dive certification, or you may forfeit the right to dive with
a resort. A wetsuit or shortie is recommended to bring with you for diving.
